Sports development officers»
aim is to provide opportunities for participation in sport for all sections of the community. They distribute information and organise sport-related projects, classes, programmes, coaching, club development and training for those who want to participate for fun and those who are interested in competition.
The central role of this profession is to increase participation in sport of all kinds, but sports development officers also address issues of health, crime and social inclusion, often working with organisations such as health boards, schools, sports governing bodies and regeneration initiatives.
They work in partnership with government bodies to deliver government initiatives relating to sport.

Exercise and practice under the direction of athletic trainers or professional coaches, in order to develop skills, improve physical condition, and prepare for competitions.
Maintain optimum physical fitness levels by training regularly, following nutrition plans, and consulting with health professionals.
Participate in athletic events and competitive sports, according to established rules and regulations.
Receive instructions from coaches and other sports staff prior to events, and discuss their performance afterwards.
Lead teams by serving as captains.
Maintain equipment used in a particular sport.
Represent teams or professional sports clubs, performing such activities as meeting with members of the media, making speeches, or participating in charity events.
Assess performance following athletic competition, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and making adjustments to improve future performance.
Attend scheduled practice and training sessions.

Coach organize, instruct, and teach amateur and professional athletes in fundamentals of individual and team sports. In individual sports, instructors may sometimes fill this role.
Coaches train athletes for competition by holding practice sessions to perform drills and improve the athlete’s skills and stamina. Using their expertise in the sport, coaches instruct the athlete on proper form and technique in beginning and, later, in advanced exercises attempting to maximize the players’ physical potential.

Because activities are as diverse as weight lifting, gymnastics, and scuba diving, and may include self-defense training such as karate, instructors tend to specialize in one or a few types of activities.
